China United Engineering Co (CUC), a subsidiary of Sinomach, and Keppel Seghers, affiliated to Singapore Keppel Corporation, have formed a partnership to build the pivotal electric power steering system for the Hong Kong integrated waste treatment facility phase I project.

It marks an important step forward in CUC’s response to the major national strategy of building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and a new breakthrough in the internationalization of the company’s waste-to-energy general contracting business.

The Hong Kong integrated waste treatment facility is Hong Kong’s first integrated municipal solid waste management facility, as well as one of its most important environmental protection projects. It is expected to be put into operation in 2025, with a 15-year running period.

When completed, the project on the south coast of Shek Kwu Chau will be able to deal with 3,000 tons of mixed municipal waste per day and generate about 480 million kW·h of electricity per year.

Its green energy output will power 100,000 households in Hong Kong and reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by up to 440,000 tons, realizing municipal waste disposal while following the principle of reducing, causing no harm and reclaiming. It is expected to resolve the garbage disposal problem that has plagued Hong Kong for decades.

After more than three years of technical exchanges and all-round communication in the early stage of the project, CUC and Keppel Seghers have established solid mutual trust and friendship. At present, they are deliberating over further cooperation in the project’s sewage treatment plant, and are targeting long-term cooperation in the field of international energy and environmental engineering.
