The Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC) -- the state power corporation of Cambodia -- awarded the Cambodian Tatay Hydropower Project the Certificate of Appreciation on Dec 16, to commend the project for beating the target for 2020 and making outstanding contributions to Cambodia’s economic and social development. The project has been providing clean and high-quality electricity for many years.

It was undertaken by China National Heavy Machinery Corporation (CHMC), a subsidiary of Sinomach. A local affiliate, Cambodian Tatay Hydropower Limited (CTHL), was set up to maintain operations.

In confronting the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the first half of 2020 and taking up the opportunities brought by persistent heavy rainfall in the year’s second half, the company ensured safety and benefits, tightened epidemic prevention and control, and further strengthened the inspection and maintenance of the hydroelectric power station buildings and electromechanical equipment, bringing this year’s production and operation to a successful conclusion.

As a pillar of the state grid of Cambodia, the Cambodian Tatay Hydropower Project has more than met its annual power generation task for six years. With investment of about $540 million, the project has a total installed capacity of 246 megawatts and a designed average annual generating capacity of 858 million kilowatt hours.

As of Dec 16, the project had generated 879 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, accounting for 103.53 percent of this year’s designed targeted capacity.

It has exerted a major influence on developing clean energy, stabilizing electricity prices and promoting national economic construction in Cambodia as a model of China-Cambodia cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
